Business Mileage for Mobile Workers
Mobile workers — field engineers, delivery drivers, community nurses, surveyors — rack up most of their mileage between jobs, not on a single commute. Those inter-site journeys are business mileage and can be claimed at 55p per mile (up to 10,000 miles in 2026/27). Use the calculator below to estimate a full day’s route.
What counts for a mobile worker
Your trip from home to your normal depot is ordinary commuting and is not claimable. Everything between and around jobs is.
- Travel between job sites during the day
- Travel from your depot or base to your first job
- Travel from your last job back to your depot
- Detours to collect parts or equipment
The HMRC record-keeping expectation
HMRC has stated that where an employee claims vehicle tax relief, mileage logs should include the reason for each journey and its starting and ending postcodes. For mobile workers with many short trips a day, a manual log is almost impossible to keep accurately.
MileageCalendar solves this by building the log from your appointment calendar — each job becomes a record with its reason and postcodes already filled in.
