Business Mileage for Tradespeople

Which journeys a tradesperson can claim

If you are self-employed and your home is your business base, every leg from home to the first job and back is claimable.

  • Travel between job sites during the day
  • Travel to collect materials or parts for a job
  • Travel from your yard or home base to your first job (if home is your business base)
  • Travel from your last job back to your yard or home base

Why a multi-stop calculator helps

A tradesperson might visit four or five jobs a day. Adding each leg by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. The calculator below lets you enter every job as a stop and routes the whole day in one calculation.

Worked example — an electrician’s day

Even the detour to the trade counter counts if it is for a job. At 39 miles a day, five days a week, that is nearly £5,600 of claimable mileage a year at the 55p rate.
