Business Mileage for Community and Healthcare Workers

Community and healthcare workers drive between service users throughout every shift. Those inter-visit journeys are business mileage, and HMRC now expects your log to include the reason for each journey and its start and end postcodes. Use the calculator below to estimate a shift’s route.

Why this matters for healthcare workers

Community nurses, domiciliary carers, health visitors and support workers can drive 30–60 miles a day between service users. At 55p per mile, that is £16–£33 of claimable mileage every single day — and over £4,000 a year for a full-time worker.

HMRC has made clear that where an employee claims vehicle tax relief, mileage logs should include the reason for each journey and its starting and ending postcodes. For a worker with 8–12 visits a day, a manual log is almost impossible to keep accurately. MileageCalendar builds it automatically from your appointment schedule — each visit becomes a record with the service user’s name as the reason and the two postcodes already captured.

Which journeys a community worker can claim

Your commute from home to your base is not claimable. Everything between and around visits is.

  • Travel between service users during a shift
  • Travel from your base or office to your first visit
  • Travel from your last visit back to your base
  • Detours to collect medication or supplies for a service user

If your employer pays less than 55p

Many NHS trusts and care agencies pay 25p–45p per mile. If you are paid less than the 55p HMRC rate, you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference through a P87 (up to £2,500) or your Self Assessment. Over a year of full-time community work, this can be worth £200–£600.
