What Should an Invoice Include?
A complete checklist of everything your UK invoice must include to be legally compliant and get paid on time.
Required information
Every UK invoice must include: your business name and address, the customer's name and address, a unique invoice number, the invoice date, a description of the goods or services, the amount being charged, and the payment due date.
If you are a limited company, you must also include your company registration number and registered office address.
VAT invoice requirements
If you are VAT-registered, your invoice must also include your VAT registration number, the VAT rate applied to each line item, the total VAT charged and the total amount including VAT.
For invoices under a certain amount, you can issue a simplified VAT invoice, but most businesses issue full VAT invoices for all transactions.
Optional but recommended
Include your logo and branding for a professional look. Add your bank details so the customer can pay immediately. Include payment terms and instructions for how to pay.
Adding a purchase order number if the customer uses one helps larger businesses process your invoice faster.
