Mileage for the self-employed

Self-employed workers — freelancers, contractors, consultants and sole traders — can use HMRC simplified mileage rates to claim for business driving without tracking actual fuel and running costs.

The rate for cars and vans in 2026/27 is 55p per mile up to 10,000 qualifying miles, then 25p. You record the total on your Self Assessment return as a business expense, which lowers your taxable profit and your tax bill.

Common qualifying journeys

  • Client and customer meetings
  • Site visits and surveys
  • Picking up supplies or materials for a job
  • Delivering products to customers
  • Attending training or trade shows
