How to Price Your Services
A practical guide to pricing your services competitively as a UK sole trader or small business.
Table of Contents
Cost-based pricing
Start by calculating your costs — materials, labour, overheads and a profit margin. This gives you a baseline below which you should not go. Your hourly rate should cover your costs plus a reasonable profit.
Remember to include hidden costs like insurance, vehicle costs, software subscriptions and the time you spend on admin that is not billable.
Value-based pricing
Value-based pricing focuses on the value you deliver to the customer rather than just your costs. If your service saves a customer £5,000, charging £1,000 is good value even if it only took you an hour.
This approach works best for services with clear, measurable outcomes. Understand the problem you solve and the impact of solving it before setting your price.
Competitor pricing
Research what other businesses in your area charge for similar services. This gives you a sense of the market rate. You do not have to match it — you can charge more if you offer better quality or service, or less if you are building your customer base.
Be careful about racing to the bottom on price. Low prices attract price-sensitive customers who are less loyal and more likely to dispute invoices.
